Who THINKS of this sort of thing?!

So rather along the lines of this last post on medical weirdness……

We were watching the news, a rare occurrence in our house, last night.
King 5’s Health Link segment comes on and they’re talking about amputations of the knee. Generally done because of cancer, this leaves the surgeon with two options.
Amputate the whole limb above the knee leaving the patient as an above-the-knee amputee which makes prostheses and walking more complicated.
Or amputate the affected area of the femur and tibia, including the knee, then turn the foot around backwards and attach it to the femur so the ankle can be used as a knee.
Viola!
The diseased area of bone is gone and your patient is a below-the-knee amputee (sorta) which means that they’ll have greater mobility and generally a better chance of having an active lifestyle which is especially critical seeing that the majority of amputees of this type are children.

Who thinks these things up? I mean, is that brilliant or what?

A side note is that while we were watching this I became more and more aware of my ankles and had to actually watch them flex and extend to be sure that it would work. It does.
Effin’ brilliant man.
